The Shanghai Sexual Networks Survey (SSNS) was a local sexual networks survey conducted between October 2007 and January 2008 in Shanghai, China. The survey documents the sexual behaviors and ego-centric sexual networks of a city-wide representative sample of 1,688 respondents age 18-49. Comprised of registered residents and rural-urban migrants, the survey’s purpose was to document the structure of heterosexual networks in China, and evaluate their contribution to the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. Information was collected from respondents regarding the following: their demographic and socioeconomic attributes, and those of their marital or cohabiting partner; their most recent three non-marital partnerships and attributes of these partnerships; and the symptoms of sexually transmitted infections. Additional modules were collected on respondents’ assessment of marital life quality, fertility histories and fertility preferences.
